Sarah Streyder Named 2022 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year®

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 5, 2022) - Sarah Streyder, a Space Force spouse, was named the 2022 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year® today in recognition of her outstanding commitment to the military community. Though this award is in its 14th year of honoring the service and dedication of our nation's 1.1. million military spouses, this is the first year including the Space Force as one of the seven military branches to be judged. Video of the awards ceremony is available here: 2022 MSOY Ceremony.

Nominated by her peers, Sarah's accomplishments include her work as part of the White House’s correspondence office team under President Obama, then later her work as part of the Department of Commerce’s legislative affairs team where she helped coordinate administration-wide strategy on trade policy advocacy. A gifted speaker, she has presented on CNN, Fox News, and CBS, as well as having written for USA Today, The New York Times, and Newsweek for her opinion on the military-family perspective on current issues that affect the homefront. She is currently the Executive Director at Secure Families Initiative (SFI), a nonpartisan organization with a mission to mobilize military partners, family members, and veterans to vote and advocate for their communities, especially on issues of foreign policy and national security.

"SFI was founded in the belief that military spouses belong in every single policy conversation that impacts us. We do two things: encourage military spouses and family members to get involved in the process by providing information and motivation, and represent military spouses and families in those policy conversations. Whether it's talking about voting policy or even foreign policy, we know that those big conversations over war and peace directly impact us on the home front," says Sarah.

"I am delighted that Sarah is our 2022 Military Spouse of the Year winner. Not only is she a shining representative for the Space Force and all military spouses, she is an exquisite example of the high caliber of MSOYs who dedicate their time by giving back to our community. With her determination to involve military families in the voting process, especially during an election year, she is an asset to our democracy and will continue to lead our military families’ involvement in advocacy discussions as it affects them," says Lt. Gen. Stanley “Sid” E. Clarke III, USAF (Ret.), Chairman of Armed Forces Insurance.

Before announcing the overall 2022 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year®, the finalists from each branch of service were honored at the annual awards luncheon, which was hosted at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel and attended by military, elected, and civilian VIPs.

The 2022 Branch Winners are:

Monica Basset, Army

Vincent Edward Toth, Marine Corps

Sergio Rodriguez, Navy

Heba Abdelaal, Air Force

Sarah Streyder, Space Force

Abbi McCracken, Coast Guard

Cindy Meilli, National Guard

These Branch Winners emerged from a pool of more than 500 nominees, advancing through three separate rounds of voting and a judges' panel review.

Initially, the winner of the local level Marine Corps Base Quantico Spouse of the Year award, Sarah was awarded the branch level Space Force Spouse of the Year® title before ultimately being chosen as the overall 2022 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year®.

Sarah is a graduate from the University of Cambridge with a Master of Philosophy in Public Policy. She and her husband, Sgt. Jason Streyder, will start their first Space Force assignment in June 2022 and is expecting their first child this fall.

"We're both so excited about this opportunity to help shape a brand-new military branch's culture from the ground up," Sarah said.
