For the Milspouse Who Thinks of Everything: AFI Flood and Fire Insurance

Milspouses are resilient! We don’t care what anyone says -- military spouses did NOT “know what they were getting into” when they married someone in the military. Instead, we receive zero training, no briefings, and only have a support network if we develop one ourselves. We learn from groups on social media, from friendly neighbors on base, and last but not least, from the school of hard knocks.

That’s right -- no matter how much we think we’ve got this lifestyle in the bag, we are still thrown surprises left and right. Think about it… what’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you as a milspouse? For example, it could be having things break during a deployment, issues with paperwork, PCSing while your spouse is deployed, or even giving birth while he or she is deployed.

What has this taught you? Always hope for the best but prepare for the worst, get a power of attorney, have a sense of humor, and make sure you’re properly insured.

Milspouses, we appreciate you! That’s why we want to hook you up with some of the crazier events that could happen that you might not have considered yet.

Is Flooding Common at Your Duty Station?

Even if you grew up in the driest desert for the majority of your life, you could be dealing with things like snowstorms, hurricanes, and flooding based off of where the military sends you. Each geographic location is different, so keep that in mind when you’re looking at insurance needs.

Did you know that floods are more likely to occur than fires in many parts of the country? Few homeowners are protected from floods, as standard homeowner policies do not cover flood damage. Even if your home isn’t in a high-risk flood region, it could still be affected by rising water levels due to a hurricane or a severe storm.

Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) writes flood insurance policies through the largest insurance company providing flood insurance for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through FEMA. To learn more, please click here.

It’s Getting Hot In Here...

Speaking of fire, does your homeowner policy cover it? When parts of California and the Pacific Northwest were ravaged by wildfires, many military families were impacted. This is not to mention that mistakes in the kitchen, with a fireplace, or electrical issues can spark a fire within seconds.

Your home is your biggest investment, so why not fully protect it? AFI offers comprehensive home insurance packages that protect your dwelling from certain hazards and perils.

Military spouses, we appreciate you, and know that you’ll handle whatever comes your way with strength and grace. (A little extra insurance doesn’t hurt, either!)
