Disaster preparedness season

As the season turns to Spring, the weather changes are something to pay attention to. Thunderstorms are the top cause of severe weather - which typically means lightning storms, tornadoes, and flooding is not far behind.

Temperatures can swing back and forth between warm and frigid. Sunny days may easily be followed by a week of stormy weather. Sometimes, extreme weather changes can occur even within the same day. As the Earth prepares for the Springtime bloom, we should prepare for the weather.

While the Spring season is notoriously unpredictable, the best way to keep yourself and your family safe is by making plans. Here are some tips to best prepare you for the potential weather disasters Spring has to offer.

Have an evacuation plan

Practice your planned escape route with a destination that you and your loved ones are familiar with. If you’re in the direct path of storms, it might be a good idea to plan to stay with friends or family, book a hotel, or have a designated shelter plan. We recommend practicing your emergency preparedness plan for every type of severe weather.

Easy access to personal information

It may be wise to have a list of emergency contacts and important personal information including:

  • phone numbers of neighbors, family, and friends
  • insurance and property information
  • telephone numbers of utility companies
  • medical information

Have a complete first-aid kit

Better to be safe than sorry, right? Having a well-equipped first-aid kit readily available is a must. Items such as:

  • non-latex gloves
  • assortment of adhesive bandages and wrap
  • antibiotic ointments
  • sterile gauze pads in assorted sizes
  • absorbent compress dressings
  • tweezers
  • scissors
  • adhesive cloth tape
  • aspirin packets
  • anti-bacterial wipes
  • first aid instruction booklet

Be sure to personalize it to meet the needs of you and your family! It’s better to over-prepare than lack in the event of an emergency.
